Men's Tennis Breezes Through Opening Day of Competition at NCCAA National Tournament

MOBILE, Ala.- The Sailfish men’s tennis team shook off any potential rust on Tuesday when they battled a pair of opponents in the opening round of the NCCAA National Tournament from the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. Palm Beach Atlantic had not played a match since April 19th but found their stride early on as they defeated Indiana Wesleyan University and Campbellsville University by the scores of 5-1 and 5-0 respectively.

PBA improves their overall record to 14-10 on the year while marching on to day two of the NCCAA National Tournament on Wednesday. The ‘Fish will take on McMurry University at 9 am to wrap up pool play.

Against Indiana Wesleyan the Sailfish managed two win at Nos. 1 and 3-doubles to stake themselves to an early lead before winning or at worst leading each of their singles matchups. With postseason play seeing each of the sets concluded once a match is in hand the team didn’t need to go further than the minimum five wins.

Romain Nowaczyk and Nicolas Uryson continued to impress at No. 1-doubles for PBA as they came away with an 8-4 win while Asti Adams and Kevin Reifler remained a reliable pair at No. 3-doubles with a tight 9-8 (7-5) victory.

In singles it was once again Nowaczyk at the top as he defeated Kyle Johnson by a score of 6-0, 6-2 with Johnson entering play as the No. 28-ranked singles player by the ITA within the NAIA ranks.

Uryson earned a 5-0 lead at No. 2-singles before his opponent retired due to injury while Adams rounded out the wins for PBA with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4-singles.

Against Campbellsville it was once again a dominant performance by the PBA men as they came away with a 5-0 victory over the Tigers.

The team’s doubles pairs rolled through their opponents including Mark Heimberger and Nicholas Battistini coming in for an 8-3 win at No. 2-doubles while Heimberger (6-1, 6-0) and Adams (6-2, 6-4) led the team to the 5-0 sweep with wins at Nos. 4 and 5-singles respectively.

Campbellsville entered play with a No. 22 national ranking as a team by the ITA within the NAIA ranks.
