WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's and women's basketball teams each had a student-athlete earn Academic All-District honors from College Sports Communicators.
Maria Benitez-Zayas from the PBA women's basketball team and
Aleksa Rakic from the PBA men's basketball team earned honors from CSC for their work on and off the court.
To be eligible for the academic all-District program, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average. Nominated student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games. No student-athlete is eligible until they have completed one calendar year at their institution, or they must be a graduate student competing at a different institution than the one from which they earned their undergraduate degree.
Benitez-Zayas is in her third season with the Sailfish, starting every game for PBA's women's basketball team this season. She's averaged 8.9 points, 4.0 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. She's scored double-digits in 12 games this season, including an active four-game streak in her last four games. She is majoring in Exercise Science with pre-physical therapy concentration.
Aleksa Rakic is in his fourth season with the PBA men's basketball team. He has played in 24 of PBA's 25 games this season, including 10 appearances in the starting lineup. He's averaged 4.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game for the Sailfish this season. He is majoring in management.
Both Sailfish basketball teams play their final regular season game on Saturday at Rollins. The women's game starts at 2 p.m. followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.
