DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis team competed at the Embry-Riddle Open over the weekend. This was the first competition, for the 'Fish under first-year head coach Marc Murray. PBA closed out the weekend with eight singles victories and six wins in doubles play versus competition from Florida National and Embry-Riddle.
The first day of singles featured two rounds as
Blake Williams,
Luis Eduardo Platas, Peter Drager, and
Juan Fernandez competed in the gold flight bracket. Williams defeated FNU's Luigi Stefanacci 6-1, 6-4. In the second round, Williams dropped his match to ERAU's Fernando Alonso 6-2, 6-1.
Luis Eduardo Platas fell to ERAU's Michele Iftimie 6-3, 7-5 and to FNU's Guido Gentile in three sets 2-6, 7-6(5), 10-5. PBA freshman Peter Drager split the first day of competition. The Hungarian native won his first match over Gentile 4-6, 6-0, 10-3, and was defeated by ERAU's Alvaro Diaz 6-3, 6-4. Fernandez fell to Diaz 6-1, 6-2 and to FNU's Umberto Particelli 6-2 in both sets. The lone Sailfish victory on day two was Platas over Fernandez 6-2, 6-1. Williams was defeated 6-1, 6-0, and Drager dropped his match 6-4, 6-4.
The blue flight bracket featured Axel Reich,
Michal Precikowski,
Juanfer Contreras, and Osvaldo Godoy. On Satuday, PBA's Axel Reich defeated FNU's Jan Opperman 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. Reich dropped his second match to ERAU's Pol Fontegloria 6-3, 6-4. Precikowski was downed by ERAU's Fernando Alonso 6-1, 6-2. In his second match, Precikowski pulled out a three-set victory over FNU's David Santamaria 6-4, 2-6, 10-8. Contrearas was defeated by Yoav Nir 6-3, 6-3 and ERAU's Luke Paschal 7-5, 2-6, 10-3. Godoy went 1-1 on day one. He dropped his first match to FNU's Ignacio Munoz 6-2, 6-0, then in the second round defeated FNU's Jules Gringon 6-1, 3-6, 10-3. The 'Fish had two victories on day two as Precikowski beat Gringon 6-1, 6-2, and Reich defeated Santamaria 6-3, 6-2. Contreras was defeated in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 10-6, and Godoy was defeated 6-1, 6-1.
Four tandems competed in the doubles gold flight bracket and played three matches with one on day one and two on Sunday. On Saturday, the Sailfish picked up two doubles victories. PBA's Kazuma Utematzu and Drager defeated FNU's Luis Figueroa and Munoz 6-3. Williams and Fernandez beat ERAU's Lukas Schneider and Luke Paschal 6-3. The tandem of Precikowski and Platas fell to Alonso Diaz 6-0.The group of Reich and Contreras lost to FNU's Elturan Kishiev and Miguel Ruiz 6-2. On day two, Precicowski and Platas went 2-0 as they beat Kishiev and Ruiz 6-4 and defeated ERAU's Alex Neumann and Blake Rohweder 6-4. Rich and Contreras beat FNU's Hamish Lee and Gringon 6-3 but they dropped their second match 6-4. Williams and Fernandez dropped their first match 6-4 then won their second over Kishiev and Ruiz in a 7-5 tiebreaker. Drager and Utematzu dropped both of their matches on day two.
Next for the Sailfish, they host a fall exhibition versus Atlantis on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
