Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C. – Palm Beach Atlantic's women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins to close out the Florence City Tournament, finishing in 5th place of the eight team tournament. The Sailfish defeated Barton 5-0 before turning back Newberry 5-2.
In the first match of the day the Sailfish exerted their power in doubles, dropping just five games en route to sweeping the Bulldogs. Michaela Mignemi and Romina Bolagay earned the 8-1 win at No. 3 while the duos of Taylor Conti/Yuliia Russu and Laura Andersen/Johanna Kern both won by the same 8-2 score.
It was Mignemi and Bloagay who were able to pick up the singles victories needed to assure the 'Fish of the team win. Mignemi dropped just one game at No. 4 while Bolagay won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Estefani Fernandez was a game away at 6-1, 5-1 when the team match was clinched.
In the second match of the day the 'Fish had a tougher time overall but Mignemi kept rolling. Teaming with Bolagay in doubles again, the duo won convincingly 8-0 as PBA picked up two points in doubles play. Mignemi didn't drop a set in singles play either, winning 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth position.
Also in doubles it was Conti and Russu who picked up a point for the Sailfish, winning 9-7. Conti was also a winner in singles play, taking down Lucia Davila 6-2, 6-2. Bella Mermersky clinched the match for PBA with a three-set victory at No. 3. Mermersky dropped the first set 6-4 before bouncing back to win 6-2, 6-2 to give the 'Fish their second straight win.
The Sailfish are back in action next weekend as they play three matches in three days all against Top-25 teams. The first matchup comes on Friday as the 'Fish take on No. 25 Valdosta State in Valdoasta, Ga. at 3:30 p.m.
