Sailfish Snap Skid, Defeat Tampa in Women's Tennis

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – No. 39 Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis snapped a two-match losing skid with a 5-4 victory over the University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon, earning their first victory over a regional opponent this season in the process.

The ‘Fish took two of the three doubles matches, only losing 9-8 (7-2) in a tiebreak at No. 1 as Kathi Tesar and Taylor Conti lost for the first time at the top of the lineup. Maja Jovic and Valerie Nagovitcina remained perfect of the season with an 8-5 victory over Maddie Stephens and Danielle Beyes at the second spot. Teona Tatishvili and Michaela Mignemi earned their third victory of the season with an 8-2 win at No. 3.

PBA (3-3) headed into singles needing to just split the six matches and picked up two quick wins as Nagovitcina was the first off the court after a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. She now leads the team on the season with four victories in singles action. Taylor Conti also came off the court quickly with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5.

The Spartans won at No. 3 and No. 1 to pull the match to 4-3 but Jovic wrapped up her match with a 6-1 second set over Beyes at No. 4 to seal the team victory. Jovic labored to a 7-5 win in the first set to earn her first victory of the season. Tampa’s Bridgett Blowe defeated Mignemi in three sets, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 10-4.

The ‘Fish are back in action at No. 7 Nova Southeastern on Friday at 2 p.m.
