WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic Junior Josh Turner dazzled the University of Tampa on Friday night, striking out ten over seven and two-thirds innings and helping lift the Sailfish over the Spartans 5-2 at Rubin Park.
Turner (3-3) was dealing from the get-go, striking out five in a row in the first two innings. He worked around hits in the third, fourth and fifth innings, striking out four more along the way. The Spartans got their two runs in the sixth inning, but both of those were unearned. The Ogden, Iowa native got his final strikeout as his last out in the eighth, and handed the ball off to Eric Russell, who closed the door for the save.
Palm Beach Atlantic struck first in the game’s fifth inning thanks to an RBI double by Ryan Johnson that scored Jason Webb. With runners at second and third, Pat Kane smacked a single to left to give the ‘Fish a 2-0 advantage. After a popout and a walk that loaded the bases, Peter Rivera came through with a two-run single to give the ‘Fish a commanding 4-0 lead.
Tampa’s two runs came in the sixth inning and cut the lead in half, but Rivera came through again in the seventh with an RBI single to right field that brought the game to its final score of 5-2.
Turner finished the game with ten strikeouts while scattering seven hits and not allowing an earned run. Russell picked up his second save of the season.
Rivera was the only Sailfish to have a multi-hit game, driving in three runs along the way. PBA finished with eight total hits, with Kane scoring two of the five runs on the night.
PBA returns to action on Saturday against the University of Tampa with a double-header beginning at noon.
