MOBILE, Ala.- Taking on an unfamiliar opponent the Sailfish women’s tennis team still had little trouble on Wednesday when they battled Azusa Pacific (Ca.) University to a 5-1 win in the pool B final match. The Fish dropped one of their doubles matches but then came back to sweep through singles to claim their third win in as many tries at the NCCAA National Tournament in Mobile, Alabama.
The victory puts the Sailfish (19-6) one step closer to their second straight NCCAA National Championship with a semi-finals match versus Southern Nazarene University on the docket for Thursday.
Veena Vasquez and Victoria Baca teamed up for the No. 1-doubles win by a 8-0 score while Natalia Trotter and Leyla Taracena managed a tighter win at No. 2-doubles with an 8-6 victory.
Vasquez continued her dominance in singles by earning a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1-singles followed by a comeback victory from Baca at No. 2-singles with an 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.
Taracena closed things out in the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6-singles as the match was called.
