WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish women’s tennis team returned to form on Tuesday afternoon at the Oxbridge Academy Courts by knocking off cross-town rival Northwood University by a score of 7-2. The inner-city matchup featured two nationally-ranked programs with the Fish and their No. 23-ranked team defeating the No. 14-ranked (NAIA) Seahawks for PBA’s 15th victory of the season.
The Sailfish began the day by honoring two important members of the PBA program in seniors Victoria Baca and Natalia Trotter.
Both players have been consistent contributors to the Sailfish during their playing careers while helping lead this year’s team to a program-best NCAA national ranking.
The Fish began the match with two wins in doubles as Veena Vasquez teamed with Baca for an 8-6 No. 1-doubles victory while Trotter and Leyla Taracena combined for a tight 9-8 (4) tiebreaker victory at No. 2-doubles.
The top duo of Vasquez and Baca continued to be strong for Palm Beach Atlantic in singles as Vasquez claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win while Baca fought from behind to win 3-6, 6-1, 12-10 in a marathon match at No. 2-singles.
The bottom trio of Vilja Vahatalo (6-0, 6-0), Jessica Wharton (4-6, 6-2, Retired) and Taracena (6-1, 6-1) all posted solid results to close out the win for the Sailfish.
PBA has now wrapped up regular season play and will await word on which postseason format they will be invited to down the stretch.
