WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish women’s tennis team to their home court on Thursday afternoon at Gaines Park and quickly came away with a 9-0 sweep of Ave Maria (Fla.) University. The Fish would sweep their way through doubles and singles to collect their third win of the season and improve to 3-1 overall.
Seniors Victoria Baca and Natalia Trotter set the tone early on with an 8-2 win at No. 1-doubles while the tandems of Vilja Vahatalo and Jessica Wharton as well as Leyla Taracena and Maria Jimenez delivered 8-2 and 8-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3-doubles respectively.
Veena Vasquez proved dominant at the top of singles with a straight sets win (6-0, 6-0) while Baca dropped only one game at No. 2-singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Trotter and Vahatalo followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-4 pair of wins at No. 3 and No. 4-singles respectively.
Wharton and Liddy Robinson closed out singles action with Wharton proving victorious 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5-singles and Robinson producing a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6-singles.
The Fish have a quick turnaround for their next contest as they will take on Florida Tech on Friday in Melbourne with a 3 pm start.
