Softball Stumbles at Saint Leo

3/13/2026 10:27:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team returned the Sunshine State Conference Play on Friday with a double-header at No.9-ranked Saint Leo.

The 'Fish mustered one run in each game but struggled to contain the potent Lions offense. The hosts took game one 6-1 before taking game two 9-1 to sweep the doubleheader and earn the series win.

The Sailfish conclude the series with Saint Leo on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Game One – No. 9 SLU: 6, PBA: 1

Saint Leo pounced on PBA's errors in the third inning to establish their lead. A fielding error coupled with a throwing mistake allowed Sydney Cline to hit a two-RBI double to right center, putting SLU ahead. Nia DeBenedittis followed up with an RBI single, extending the lead to 3-0. The fourth inning saw a three-run homer from Abigail Hynes, pushing the Lions' lead to 6-0.

The Sailfish tried to turn the tide in the fifth when Marli Szierer sent one over the right field fence, putting PBA on the board. Unfortunately, the team couldn't keep the momentum going. A late-game walk in the seventh inning put Larken Maseda on base, but the final batters were retired, sealing the game.

Rylee Little pitched 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits, including a homer, and recorded three assists at first base. Kierea Smits came in for relief, delivering a solid 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit. Ashlyn Storms also pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and one walk against seven batters.

Game Two – No. 9 SLU: 9 – PBA: 1

PBA managed to put a run on the board in the first inning, but Saint Leo dominated with 15 hits across four innings to clinch the win.

The Sailfish had a chance to make an early impact. Kaitlyn Campbell drew a leadoff walk, followed by another walk to Dianna Montidoro. Maseda's sacrifice bunt moved the runners over, and Holly Frankl's bases-loaded walk brought in a run. Unfortunately, PBA couldn't build on this opportunity, leaving the bases loaded.

A game-changing fourth inning allowed Saint Leo to pull away from the 'Fish. They added four runs, pushing their lead to 6–1. Izzy LaRoche's two-RBI double to right center was key, extending the advantage after RBIs from Abigail Hynes and Cline. This surge was too much for the 'Fish to overcome.

Despite the early spark, the 'Fish struggled to mount further threats. In the sixth, Maseda reached on an error, but the following batters couldn't ignite a rally, ending hopes for a comeback.

Campbell reached base with a walk and scored a run. Montidoro got on base twice with two walks. Frankl added a walk and an RBI. Rylee Little pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and recording a strikeout. Kierea Smits made a short relief appearance, pitching .2 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, while striking out one. Lauren Allen started for the 'Fish, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
