ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team hit the road this weekend, as they played four matches hosted by Eckerd. The Sailfish defeated Saint Leo and Missouri State in close matches 3-2 each on Friday before returning today to take down the hosts Eckerd 5-0. PBA's lone defeat came at the hands of Jacksonville 5-0 in their final match of the weekend. The Sailfish take their record to 9-6 overall on the season.
Match 1: PBA - 3 | Saint Leo - 2
The Sailfish started the weekend with an extremely close match against the Saint Leo Lions. In a match that will be a Sunshine State Conference match next year, the Sailfish continued their domination over the Lions historically and moved their record to 12-1 against Saint Leo all-time.
Abby Plevin and
Julia Golichowski got the 'Fish off on the right foot at the No. 5 position as they captured a three-set win 24-22, 16-21, 15-10. Things evened up as a three-setter went the Lion's way as
Abigail Mason and
Oda Homme fell in the No. 4 match 21-17, 19-21, 15-13.
Katelyn Nadeau and
Karla Cantero won decisively in the No. 3 position as they came out on top 21-18, 21-16.
Gabriella Aziz and
Anna Dunbar came out on the wrong end of as tight of a match as you could have at the No. 1 position as they fell 21-19, 21-23, 15-13. With three of the four matches being close enough to have gone either way, it came down to the No. 2 match as
Eva Herz and
Lola Ackman won 21-14, 21-23, 15-13 to win the match 3-2.
Match 2: PBA - 3 | Missouri State - 2
PBA had another tight battle on their hands in the afternoon as they battled the Bears. Golichowski and Plevin stayed at the No. 5 spot, but this time came out on the wrong side of a three-setter, 13-21, 21-18, 15-11.
Annika Huhtamaki teamed up with Mason at the No. 4 match and cruised to a two-set win 21-14, 21-17. Tied 1-1, all three of the remaining matches went down to the wire, starting with Cantero and Nadeau coming up clutch winning 21-19, 9-21, 18-16 in the No. 3 match. Aziz and Dunbar took another tough loss despite playing well at the No. 1 position 28-30, 21-13, 15-13. With the match on the line, the PBA pair of Ackman and Herz in the No. 2 match rose to the occasion, winning 22-20, 15-21, 15-8 to capture the overall match.
Match 3: PBA - 5 | Eckerd - 0
Day two of the Battle on the Bay started this morning for the 'Fish with a sweep of hosts Eckerd. The Sailfish were able to control the majority of the matches in straight sets, beginning with Plevin and Golichowski taking the No. 5 match 21-14, 21-16. PBA took the No. 4 match with Mason and Huhtamaki 21-11, 21-16 while Nadeau and Cantero won the No. 3 match by taking two close sets 21-19, 21-18. Herz and Ackman cruised in their No. 2 position 21-7, 21-14 while Aziz and Dunbar were pushed to three sets in the No. 1 match but this time came out on top 12-21, 21-16, 15-9 to complete the PBA sweep.
Match 4: PBA - 0 | Jacksonville - 5
The Sailfish squared off with the Dolphins for the second time this season and the result repeated itself as PBA fell 5-0. Plevin and Golichowski finished their week with a 2-2 record as a pair as they fell in the No. 5 match to JU 21-15, 21-12. while Mason and Homme went down in straight sets 21-15, 21-12 at the No. 4 match. Nadeau and Cantero played two close sets but suffered their lone defeat of the weekend, coming up short 21-17, 21-14 while the No. 2 pair of Herz and Ackman suffered the same result, falling 21-16 in both sets to finish the weekend 3-1 as a pair. Aziz and Dunbar finished their tournament with yet another three-set match, falling 21-16, 15-11 after taking the first set 21-19.
