Box Score 2 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team concluded their series with Eckerd College with back to back wins in a Sunday double header. The Sailfish (8-18) have now won three straight games which is their best streak this season.
GAME ONE: PBA: 4 | EC: 3
Game one was played at 12 p.m., and in the first inning, the Sailfish started the game with no runs and gave up a run to the Tritons. The 'Fish were down 1-0 until the top of the fifth, where they scored two runs to give them the lead. Patrick Rakes began the inning with a single and got to second on a throwing error. Rakes then made his way to third after Kody Kelly flew out to center. Trey Miranda followed that with a bunt, which gave him the RBI and the 'Fish their first run of the game. After the Rakes score, Matthew Faranda doubled down the left field line to give Trey Miranda the unearned run and the 'Fish their first lead of the game.
The 'Fish had another two-run inning in the top of the eighth that extended their lead even more. After a Miranda single and a Faranda walk, Nate Housen followed with a single on a bunt, and a throwing error by the Tritons allowed Housen to advance and Miranda and Faranda to push the lead to 4-1.
Ryan Webster was the starting pitcher for the 'Fish and played almost the entire game until he was replaced in the ninth by Justin Lovell. Webster only allowed three hits and one run on 29 bats faced. He also had five strikeouts to go with his line. Lovell gave up three hits and two runs after barely getting much time at the mound, which forced Coach Bottenfield to make his second pitching change of the game, going with the closer for the final inning, Isaac Beebe.
Eckerd had an opportunity to tie or take the lead, but with two outs on the board, Beebe took care of business at the mound and struck out the Tritons batter to give the Sailfish the 4-3 victory. Webster was credited with the win, making him 2-0 on the season. Beebe did have an impressive performance, with two strikeouts on four bats faced in his short time at the mound.
Faranda, Housen, and Miranda all had notable performances in the low-scoring game, with an RBI each. Rakes also had a good game, getting two hits and a run. Sean Williams managed to get two hits as well, but didn't score any runs.
GAME TWO: PBA:3 | EC:1
Derek Langfelder was the starting pitcher for game two of the double header, and the two teams were scoreless through the first six innings. Thankfully, the Sailfish were the first to score, and it happened after a Matty Warren walk and Sal Grinstead single to get them on first and second, followed by a Stanton Leuthner double to send Warren to home plate and get himself an RBI. Following in the bottom of the sixth, Eckerd put some pressure on the 'Fish after getting some hits that gave them an opportunity to score with a man on second and third. But A.J. Prendergast replaced Langfelder midway through the inning and came up clutch, forcing two grounded outs and allowing no scores for the Tritons.
Langfelder pitched 5.1 innings and only allowed five hits on 22 bats faced and not a single run in his time at the mound. He also only walked the Eckerd batters twice and had two strikeouts.
To open up the top of the seventh, Sean Williams got walked, and shortly after, Trey Miranda singled to left center. With the two on base, Warren hit a single that gave him two RBIs after Williams and Miranda made it home to give the PBA a 3-0 lead. When the Tritons were up to bat, Prendergast forced a couple walks, and Coach Bottenfield was forced to make his second pitching change of the game, going with Zachary Orloff. Eckerd still scored one run, but the Sailfish infielder made some great plays to close out the inning with a 3-1 lead.
Prendergast gave up a run and also had an error in his short time pitching. Orloff didn't spend much time at the mound either, as he was replaced in the bottom of the eighth by Gavin Ingram. Orloff didn't give up any hits or runs after pitching only one inning.
After no scores for either team in the eighth, the Sailfish had to either add more to their lead or hold off the Tritons for another score. The 'Fish couldn't manage to score any more runs, but they did make some big plays in the outfield and infield that forced two quick outs for Eckerd with no one on base. Bottenfield made one more pitching change for the game, going with Jarred Murray to take over for Ingram. Ingram pitched for an inning, and in four bats faced, he allowed no hits and had a strikeout. The next batter for the Tritons reached first on a fielder's choice, but the Sailfish got a man out on second that concluded the game and gave PBA the 3-1 victory, making it a clean sweep of the series.
The Sailfish will compete again on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m., where they will host the Lynn University Fighting Knights in an SSC matchup.
