PBA Take Down Tritons, Fall Against Spartans

3/23/2024 12:28:00 PM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team wrapped up play this weekend by hosting two familiar foes in Eckerd and Tampa. The Sailfish handled the Tritons 4-1 before turning their attention to a strong Tampa side that defeated PBA 5-0. PBA's record moves to 12-13 on the season after a 3-1 weekend of matches.

Match 1: PBA - 4 | Eckerd - 1
The Sailfish and the Tritons faced off for the second time this season. After winning 5-0 in the first matchup, the 'Fish were pushed more by the visitors but captured a comfortable 4-1 win today. Oda Homme and Julia Norville got PBA off to a strong start as they came out on top 21-17, 21-18 in the No. 4 match. Anna Dunbar and Eva Herz had to dig deep as PBA's No. 2 pair, bouncing back from dropping the opening set to take the second 21-17 and the third 15-11. Karla Cantero and Abby Plevin teamed up in the No. 5 match and scored the third point for the 'Fish as they won in straight sets 22-20, 21-18. Lola Ackman and Annika Huhtamaki were victorious in the No. 3 match 21-19, 21-17 while Eckerd found their lone point at the No. 1 match as Gabriella Aziz and Abigail Mason fell 27-25, 12-21, 19-17.

Match 2: Tampa - 5 | PBA - 0
In a matchup that likely will decide the winner of the Sunshine State Conference in years to come as beach volleyball becomes a sponsored sport in the SSC next year, it was the Spartans who came out on top on the day. Despite the final scoreline, the 'Fish were in every match, with chances to extend or win them at every flight. Plevin and Cantero captured their opening set 21-19 before falling 21-10 in the second and 15-13 in a close, deciding third set at the No. 5 position. Homme and Norville bounced back from a dropped first set to take the second 22-20 before also coming up short in the final set 15-11. Ackman and Huhtamaki remained in the No. 3 flight as the latter was forced to battle through an injury on their way to a 21-17, 21-15 defeat. Dunbar and Herz went down in straight sets, just running out of gas in the second frame 23-21 while Aziz and Mason couldn't top the Spartans' top pair, falling 21-19, 21-12.

It was a strong weekend overall for PBA as they handled Tusculum and Eckerd easily and defeated a solid Spring Hill side on their way to a 3-1 weekend. PBA will hit the road next weekend, taking a trip to Tampa where they will face the Spartans again followed by Saint Leo and Florida Southern.
