Sailfish Sweep Day One at PBA Invitational

3/22/2024 1:42:00 PM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team kicked off day one of the PBA Invitational hosted at the Rinker Athletic Campus. On a rainy day, the Sailfish were able to come out on top against Spring Hill 3-2 followed by a 4-1 victory over Tusculum. PBA's record moves to 11-12 on the season after the two wins today.

Match 1: PBA - 3 | Spring Hill - 2
The Sailfish got back to their winning ways today as they returned home and faced the Badgers. The two sides have battled in the AVCA Small College Championship in recent seasons with each side having successes over the other. Today it was the Sailfish who got the upper hand, started by Julia Golichowski and Abby Plevin taking the final two sets of the No. 5 match 21-17, 15-12 and dropping the first 21-18. Oda Homme and Julia Norville captured a vital point in the No. 4 position as they also overcame a tight dropped opening set to win 21-17 and 15-12 to close out their victory. The Badgers scored with their No. 1 pair as Gabriella Aziz and Abigail Mason went down 21-17, 21-15. Anna Dunbar and Eva Herz played a match that could have gone either way as PBA's No. 2 pair but SHC took it 16-21, 22-20, 16-14. The No. 3 pairing of Lola Ackman and Annika Huhtamaki clinched the match with a comfortable 21-15, 21-14 win to swing the match PBA's way.

Match 2: PBA - 4 | Tusculum - 1
PBA turned their attention in the afternoon to a Pioneer side who was playing their third match of the day. The 'Fish proved to be too much for Tusculum as PBA captured a comfortable 4-1 win. The two sides split the early matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions as Homme and Norville came out on top 21-16, 21-10 while Nadeau and Cantero suffered their second defeat of the day 21-10, 21-19. The second wave of matches all went PBA's way as Huhtamaki and Ackman looked strong again in straight sets while Dunbar and Herz bounced back with a 21-18, 21-15 win. The No. 1 match went the distance as Aziz and Mason ground out the third set 15-13 for their victory.

The Sailfish ended a seven-game skid, primarily against DI-ranked opponents, with their two wins today. The 'Fish play two more matches tomorrow, beginning with Eckerd in the morning and then a tough match against a strong Tampa side in the afternoon.
