PBA Comes Up Short Against FAU and FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team returned to action today, as they hit the road to face Florida Gulf Coast and No. 16 ranked Florida Atlantic. The Sailfish fell 4-1 against the Eagles followed by a ?-? defeat against the Owls. PBA's record falls to 9-12 on the season after today's results.

Match 1: FGCU - 4 | PBA - 1 
The Sailfish faced Florida Gulf Coast for the first time this season after meeting six times over the past two years. The 'Fish have been on a run of ranked and division one opponents as they have faced seven straight. PBA was able to get one match off the host Eagles as Lola Ackman and Annika Huhtamaki captured the No. 3 position by splitting the first two sets 23-21 and 14-21 before taking an extended third 17-15. The 'Fish were able to take two more matches to three sets as Gabriella Aziz and Abigail Mason played together as the No. 2 pair, falling 21-12, 19-21, 15-9. Katelyn Nadeau and Karla Cantero captured the second set in their match 23-21 but came up short in the deciding third set 15-8. Anna Dunbar and Eva Herz teamed up in the No. 1 match, losing to the FGCU top side 21-13, 21-10 while Julia Golichowski and Abby Plevin fell in the No. 5 match 21-10, 21-17.

Match 2: No. 16 FAU - 5 | PBA - 0
PBA and the No. 16 ranked Owls squared off for the second time in a five-day span. The result in both matches were the same as the ranked FAU side came away with a 5-0 victory. Dunbar and Herz put up the best fight in the No. 2 match for PBA as they took their opening set 21-17, before having the Owls come back to take the following two sets 21-14, 15-10. Aziz and Mason paired up in the No. 1 position and played well, but came up short in two close sets 21-17, 21-19. Coming off their win earlier in the day, Ackman and Huhtamaki put up another strong performance but lost two tight sets 21-17, 21-18. FAU captured points in the No. 4 and No. 5 matches taking down the PBA pairs of Nadeau and Cantero and Golichowski and Plevin in straight sets.

The Sailfish are back in action this weekend as they host the PBA Invitational at the Rinker Athletic Campus this weekend. PBA returns to action against DII opponents for the remainder of the season as they start Friday against Spring Hill and Eckerd and Saturday against Tampa and Tusculum.
