Sailfish Dominate Opening Matches Against Panthers and Buccaneers

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team got its season underway today as they hosted Palm Beach State and Barry for a tri-match at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The Sailfish rolled to two victories to start their season 2-0 by defeating Palm Beach State 4-1 and Barry 5-0 in coaching debuts from Brittany Tiegs and Casey Curran.

Match 1: PBA - 4 | PBSC - 1
The Sailfish tinkered with their lineup in the opener as they faced off with the defending junior college national champions. Julia Golichowski and Lola Ackman teamed up in the number five position and won in straight sets 21-12, 21-8 to get PBA off to an early lead. Newcomers Abby Plevin and Annika Huhtamaki made their 'Fish debut as the number four tandem and came out on top in two close sets, 21-18, 21-16. Abigail Mason and Karla Cantero were regular partners throughout last season and they stayed together as the number three team and won 21-13, 21-14 to give PBA the required three points for victory. Gabriella Aziz and Oda Homme added one more victory for the 'Fish as they won the number two match in straight sets 21-17, 21-19. The Panthers gathered their victory in the number one match as Eva Herz and Julia Norville fell in three sets. PBA took the first 21-16 before dropping the final two sets 21-14, 15-9. 

Match 2: PBA - 5 | BU - 0
The Sailfish faced off against a Barry Buccaneer squad that was playing their first competitive games in program history. They were rudely welcomed against a PBA they will face off with annually in Sunshine State Conference play beginning next year. PBA won in two sets each match on their way to a sweep, beginning with Golichowski and Katelyn Nadeau winning their No. 5 match 21-11, 21-7. Cantero and Mason stayed together as the No. 4 team and won comfortably 21-9, 21-12 while PBA clinched the match as Herz and Norville won at the No. 3 spot 21-12, 21-11. Homme and Aziz stayed at the No. 2 spot as a tandem as stayed perfect early on the year winning 21-6, 21-14. PBA's projected top-side of Savannah DeCarlo and Anna Dunbar made their season debut and won 21-9, 21-18.

PBA returns to action in 12 days as they host two more sides at the RAC. They will face Webber International and Warner on Feb. 17 in their final tune-up before beginning matches against division I opponents.
