JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team hit the road this weekend as they faced their toughest test of the season so far against four Division I opponents. After starting their season 3-0, the Sailfish fell in all four matches on the weekend. They narrowly fell to Tennessee Chattanooga 3-2 before falling to North Florida, Jacksonville, and FIU 5-0.
Match 1: UTC - 3 | PBA - 2
The Sailfish started off their weekend with their closest match of the weekend. They faced the Mocs on Saturday morning and fell behind in the early matches before coming back late in the top-flight matches before coming up one match short.
Julia Golichowski and
Julia Norville started play in the No. 5 flight and took the opening set 23-21, but the pair was unable to close out one of the final two sets, falling 21-12 in the second and 15-12 in the third.
Abby Plevin and
Katelyn Nadeau teamed up as the No. 4 pairing for PBA and went down in straight sets 21-16, 21-13.
Karla Cantero and
Abigail Mason fell in the No. 3 match in straight sets 21-12, 21-15.
Anna Dunbar and
Gabriella Aziz teamed up in the No. 2 spot and came out on top in two close sets 21-19, 21-17. With the overall match already decided,
Eva Herz and
Lola Ackman battled in the No. 1 match and came out on top 23-21, 15-21, and 18-16 in the final set.
Match 2: UNF - 5 | PBA - 0
The Sailfish returned Saturday afternoon for the second match of the tournament against a strong North Florida side who is receiving votes in the AVCA national poll. The Ospreys proved to be too much for the Sailfish on the day as they won 5-0 overall and finished each individual match in straight sets. Ackman and Herz fell at the No. 1 position 21-12, 21-7 while Dunbar and Aziz suffered the same fate 21-14, 21-17 at the No. 2 spot.
Oda Homme jumped into the No. 3 match with Mason and the two played well but narrowly fell 22-20, 21-16. Cantero teamed up with
Skye Lower at the No. 4 spot as they dropped the first set 21-16 and the second 21-8. UNF completed their sweep by defeating Plevin and Golichowski 21-16, 21-15 in the No. 5 match.
Match 3: JU - 5 | PBA - 0
PBA returned back to play today for two matches as they first battled with the host Dolphins in the morning. PBA played well but failed to close out matches against the hosts. Dunbar and Aziz were right on the verge of a victory in the No. 1 match but fell 15-9 in the third after splitting the first two. Herz and Ackman lost in an extended second set 23-21 while Homme and Mason were on the wrong side of two close sets 21-19, 21-17 in the No. 3 match. Plevin and
Annika Huhtamaki tried their hand at the No. 4 match but fell 21-13, 21-12 while Golichowski and Cantero battled in the No. 5 spot before falling 15-10 in the third set.
Match 4: #13 FIU - 5 | PBA - 0
Facing their top-ranking opponent of the weekend, the 'Fish fell across the board against the Panthers. Aziz and Dunbar fell 21-14, 21-9 in the top match while Herz and Ackman went down 21-12, 21-15. Homme and Mason went down 21-8, 21-16 while Plevin and Huhtamaki played strong but came up short 21-17 in both sets. Golichowski and Cantero put up the best fight, forcing three sets but falling in the final one 15-9.
The Sailfish will look to get back to their winning ways on March 1-2 when they head down to Miami to play four matches hosted by FIU. The 'Fish will face Emmanuel twice, Barry, and FIu over two days.
