LAKELAND, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team competed at the ITA Division II South Region Championships this past weekend.
The squad started with singles play in the main draw.
Virginia Borja faced Isabelle Barfoot from Montevallo University. She took the first set but lost the match 6-4, 4-6, (5). Borja lost her consolation match to Melissa Yakup Pour, 6-0, 6-2.
Jasmine Williams got a first-round bye to advance to the round of 64. She dropped her second-round match to Kristin Younes from Lynn, 6-4, 6-1. Williams nearly bounced back in the consolation draw, but she came up short 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Frida Alsterhem came up short in her first-round match against Nicole Katherine Dufour from Saint Leo, 6-3, 6-2. Alsterhem lost her consolation match, 6-2, 6-4.
Alina Hoermann was given a bye into the second round, but dropped her match, 6-0, 6-1. In the consolation draw, she earned a 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 victory over Latizia Bojara from Montevallo. Her run ended in the round of 16 against Maja Issler, 6-3, 6-0.
Alsterhem and Borja teamed up to compete in doubles. The duo faced off against Pour and Ana Villalvalzo from Montevallo. The pair lost a close match, 8-6. The pair recovered and won in the consolation bracket, defeating a team from Spring Hill College, 8-7 (6). The pair's day concluded in the quarterfinals with an 8-3 loss.
Williams and Hoermann dropped their doubles match against Savannah Williams and Anine Wilberg from Tampa. 8-4. The duo lost in the consolation bracket, 8-1.
The Sailfish compete again at the Stetson Invitational on Sept. 29.
