TAVARES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team continued play in day two of the AVCA Small College Championship today by defeating Texas A&M Kingsville and Spring Hill 3-1. The two victories take PBA's record to 20-12 on the season.
Match 1: PBA - 3 | TAMK - 1
The Sailfish finished off sweeping Pool C this morning by defeating the Javelinas 3-1 to finish 3-0 in group play. The sides continued to play to decision and stop the match once three of five wins were secured by one side. PBA got their first point as
Ashleigh Holweger and
Rebekah Machovec won the No. 2 match 21-13, 21-12. Texas A&M Kingsville got on the board winning the No. 3 match in a close one over PBA's side of
Gabriella Aziz and
Savannah DeCarlo 22-20, 21-19. The Sailfish closed out the Javelinas as
Julia Golichowski and
Natalie Skopalova won at the No. 4 position 17-21, 21-13, 15-12 while
Abigail Mason and Sydeny Wagner came out on top at position No. 5 18-21, 27-25, 15-11.
Match 2: PBA - 3 | SHC - 1
After winning Pool C, the Sailfish turned their attention to the knockout stage against Spring Hill College. The got revenge on the Badgers after SHC defeated PBA the past two seasons at the AVCA Championships. Holweger and Machovec pulled out a close match at the No. 2 position to get PBA ahead as they won 24-22, 22-20. The No. 3 pair for the Sailfish came back from a set down to win the three-setter 18-21, 21-17, 17-15 while SHC got their lone point by taking the No. 5 match against Mason and Wagner 21-15, 25-23. The Sailfish secured the knockout stage victory with a win at the No. 4 position as Golichowski and Skopalova prevailed in straight sets 22-20, 21-14.
PBA's championship hopes are still alive as they have started out the tournament 4-0. The Sailfish will need two more wins to be named the champions as up next they will face Tampa tomorrow at 10:30 am. If victorious, the 'Fish will face the winner of the Colorado Mesa and Concordia match for the AVCA Small College Championship.
