Beach Volleyball Starts Weekend with Two 5-0 Wins

TAMPA, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team traveled across the state today to begin play at the Tampa Spartans Invitational. The Sailfish opened with two matches today as they took down Erskine 5-0 before defeating Florida Southern 5-0 in the afternoon. The wins take PBA's record to 13-11 on the season.

Match 1: PBA - 5 | Erskine - 0

The Sailfish started off the weekend by securing a victory against the Flying Fleet 5-0 for the second time this season. Abigail Mason and Karla Cantero got the ball rolling at the No. 5 position as they won in straight sets 21-17, 21-16. Natalie Skopalova and Julia Golichowski came out on top in the closest match against Erskine as they won the No. 4 match in three sets 21-13, 18-21, 15-8. Gabriella Aziz and Savannah DeCarlo cruised in their No. 3 match 21-8, 21-9 while Ashleigh Holweger and Rebekah Machovec took the No. 2 match 21-16, 21-12. PBA's top pair of Lunden Evans and Mya Krystosek finished off the sweep for the 'Fish as they took their match 21-19, 21-10.

Match 2: PBA - 5 | FSC - 0

The Sailfish took down the Mocs for the fourth time this season and take their total score on the season to 19-1 as they won 5-0 for the third time. The 'Fish moved around their lineup against FSC as Holweger and Machovec moved up to the No. 1 position and took a two-setter 21-17, 21-10. Aziz and DeCarlo, now at the No. 2 spot, won 21-10 in both of their sets while Skopalova and Golichowski took their No. 3 match 21-14, 21-16. Sydney Wagner and Marilyn Cesaro teamed up at the No. 4 position and took the first set 21-14 before winning an extended second 26-24. Eva Hertz and Kayleigh Hall cruised as a tandem in the No. 5 match as they won 21-10, 21-12.

The Sailfish looked solid as they captured two wins to open their tournament in Tampa, but they will be more challenged tomorrow as they face Tampa and Saint Leo. PBA fell to Tampa 3-2 when the two sides met earlier this year and the Sailfish have taken 2-of-3 matches against the Lions this year.
