ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Palm Beach
Atlantic beach volleyball team closed out play today at the Eckerd Battle on the Bay. The Sailfish defeated hosts Eckerd 4-1 followed by Saint Leo 3-2 before falling to Tampa 3-2 in the final match of the day. PBA's record moves to 7-7 after a solid 3-1 weekend.
Match 1: PBA - 4 | Eckerd - 1
The Sailfish started the day early after their match against Eckerd was postponed from yesterday afternoon to the first match of the day today. The delay didn't hurt the Sailfish in this match as they jumped ahead of the Tritons as
Abigail Mason and
Karla Cantero rolled to an easy 21-12, 21-10 victory at the No. 5 position.
Natalie Skopalova and
Julia Golichowski took the No. 4 match 21-11, 21-16 while
Gabriella Aziz and
Savannah DeCarlo won the No. 3 match 21-15, 21-16.
Lunden Evans and
Mya Krystosek moved down to the No. 2 position and picked up a win in two sets 23-21, 21-14. The Sailfish continue to have trouble at the No. 1 position no matter who they play there as the lone defeat came in a close three-setter as
Ashleigh Holweger and
Rebekah Machovec fell 15-21, 21-10, 16-14.
Match 2: PBA - 3 | Saint Leo - 2
The Sailfish battled with the Lions for the third time this season and PBA broke the 1-1 tie between the two sides with a 3-2 victory over Saint Leo. The top of the 'Fish lineup came through in this match as Evans and Krystosek moved back up to the No. 1 position and took an impressive 21-13, 21-19 win. The Sailfish won the No. 2 and No. 3 matches as Holweger and Machovec won 21-15, 21-18 while Aziz and DeCarlo took their match 21-16, 21-14. The Lions came out on top in the bottom two matches as Skopalova and Golichowski fell in a close two-setter 21-17, 21-18. Cantero and Mason took the first set 22-20 but couldn't pull out either of the next two as they fell 21-18, 15-10.
Match 3: PBA - 2 | Tampa - 3
The Sailfish squared off with one of their biggest rivals the Tampa Spartans for the first time this season and had four of the positions go to three-set matches. The lone match that ended in two sets was the No. 1 match as Evans and Krystosek remained the top pair for the 'Fish but fell 21-19, 21-12. Holweger and Machovec bounced back from dropping their first set 21-13 at the No.2 position to win the second and third 21-17, 15-10. Aziz and DeCarlo dropped the closest match of the day at the No. 3 position 25-23, 19-21, 15-13 while Golichowski and Skopalova pulled out and extended three-setter for the Sailfish 16-21, 21-14, 17-15. The Spartans won the day at the No. 5 position as Cantero and Mason fell 23-21, 15-21, 15-13.
The Sailfish get back to action on Tuesday as they return home to the Rinker Athletic Campus. The 'Fish have a huge opportunity as they host No. 15 ranked Florida International followed by Florida Southern.
