WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team returned to their home court to take on a strong University of Tampa squad. On a day where PBA honored eight seniors, the two sides played two matches to a split with the Sailfish taking the first 3-2 and the Spartans taking the second 3-2. The results take the Sailfish's overall record to 14-11 on the year.
Match 1: PBA - 3, UT - 2Â
Two premier division two beach programs squared off today and the Sailfish were able to come out on top in match one despite falling behind early as
Karla Cantero and
Julia Golichowski fell at the No. 4 position 21-17, 21-9. At the No. 5 match,
Abigail Mason and
Olivia Finckel pulled out a huge three-set victory after dropping the first set 22-20, they bounced back and took the second and the third 21-13 and 15-12 to even up the match.
Jazz Schmidt and
Lunden Evans cruised for the Sailfish in the No. 1 match, winning impressively 21-12, 21-11.
Bailey Myott and
Gabriella Aziz teamed up at the No. 3 position but fell 21-18, 21-17 to tie the match at two wins apiece. It all came down to the No. 2 match where Lyndzey minter and
Abby DeVido rallied back from a dropped opening set 21-19 to take the second 21-19 and run away in the all deciding third 15-4. In the extra match, seniors
Caroline Henderson and
Lorrayne Silva went down in straight sets 21-14, 21-15.
Match 2: PBA - 2, UT - 3
The two
 sides went back at it again for a second time on the day and this time the Spartans were able to come out on top. They got off on the right foot with a win at the No. 4 position as Aziz and
Emma Vann fell in two sets 21-13, 21-17. Mason and Finckel stayed together at the No. 5 match for the 'Fish and once again they pulled out a three-set match 19-21, 21-16, 17-15 to move to 3-0 together as a tandem. Once again, Schmidt and Evans made light work of their No. 1 opponents, taking their record to 21-4 on the year with a 21-8, 21-13 victory. PBA needed just one of the final two matches but they were unable to get either as Cantero and Golichowski fell 21-17, 21-16 at No. 3. Myott and Minter teamed up at the No. 2 for the second match and it went to the wire but the Sailfish came up on the short end after taking the opening set 23-21, they fell 21-13 and 18-16 in the final two sets.
Kayleigh Hall and Silva played in the extra match but came up on the short end of two sets 21-15, 21-13.
The Sailfish will return to action on April 8-9 when they head down to Boca Raton. They will once again be facing nationally-ranked opponents, as they will face Saint Leo twice, No. 10 ranked, and No. 20Â FGCU.Â
