Beach Volleyball Rolls in Opening Day of Postseason Play

TAVARES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team began play today at the AVCA Small College Championship. The Sailfish are the No. 3 overall seed and the top team in Pool 3. PBA got off to a roaring start by sweeping both Wayne State and Catawba each 5-0 and sit atop their pool.

Match 1: PBA - 5, Wayne State - 0

The 'Fish began play by making light work of the number three team in their four-team pool by winning all five matches without dropping a set. Jazz Schmidt and Lunden Evans continued to man the No. 1 position and were victorious 21-9, 21-10. The No. 2 team of Lyndzey Minter and Abby DeVido took the opening set 21-10 before capturing the second 21-18. Julia Golichowski and Karla Cantero teamed up at the No. 3 position and came up on the right end of two close sets 21-19, 21-16. Olivia Finckel and Abigail Mason dominated their No. 4 match, winning 21-12, 21-11 while Gabriella Aziz and Emma Vann won the No. 5 match 21-12, 25-23.

Match 2: PBA - 5, Catawba - 0 

After taking down the number three team in their pool, the Sailfish turned to the number four team in Catawba and found similar results, winning every match decisively in straight sets. Schmidt and Evans improved their total season record to an impressive 23-6 as they won both sets 21-10 against the Indians. Minter and DeVido had no problems as they won the No. 2 match 21-6, 21-11 before Golichowski and Cantero won their No. 3 match 21-8, 21-18. Finckel and Mason rolled at the No. 4 position 21-11, 21-9 while Aziz and Vann finished up the sweep by winning 21-13, 21-7.

Kayleigh Hall and Bailey Myott teamed up in challenge pair matches today and won their pool as they defeated an opponent from Ottawa (KS) 21-9, 21-12. They also bounced back from dropping the first set against Concordia Irvine 21-18 to take the second 21-9 and the third 15-6. Lorrayne Silva and Caroline Henderson were victorious in their pair matches as they beat their Irvine opponents 21-17, 21-15 before taking down a Texas A&M Kingsville duo 21-12, 21-19.

The Sailfish return to play tomorrow and finish up Pool 3 play against Colorado Mesa who also went 2-0 today against Catawba and Wayne State. The winner of the match will emerge as the pool winner and play the number two finisher in Pool 4 later in the day.
