Sailfish Sweep Two Matches To Open FAU Beach Bash

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team returned to action today by playing two matches at the Florida Atlantic Beach Bash. The Sailfish started their four-match weekend series with a morning 4-1 victory over Austin Peay before taking down North Carolina Wilmington 4-1 in the afternoon. The two wins over Division I opponents take PBA's record to 7-1 on the season.

Match 1: PBA - 4, Austin Peay - 1

The Sailfish were strong in their opening match against the Governors taking four out of five matches in straight sets. Gabriella Aziz and Abigail Mason started things off for the 'Fish as they were victorious at the No. 4 position, winning the opening set 21-19 and taking the second 21-15. Lorrayne Silva and Caroline Henderson team up as the No. 5 pair and came out on top in an extended first 23-21 before taking the second 21-16. Lyndzey Minter and Abby DeVido earned the third point for PBA, clinching the overall match win as they cruised at the No. 2 position 21-12 and 21-17. Jazz Schmidt and Lunden Evans kept their perfect record intact as PBA's top pair as they took down their opponents 21-14 and 21-18. The Governors got on the board at the No. 3 position as Olivia Finckel and Bailey Myott dropped a tight third set 15-13. Julia Golichowski and Karla Cantero came out on top in the extra match, winning in straight sets 21-18 and 21-15.  

Match 2: PBA - 4, UNCW - 1

The 'Fish continued their run of good play this afternoon as they took down the Seahawks. Silva and Henderson stayed perfect on the day, and 3-0 on the season, as they earned PBA's first point at the No. 5 position, winning two close sets 21-19 and 21-17. Myott and Finckel moved down to the No. 4 position and were unable to pull out another extremely close match as they dropped an extended first set 24-22, before bouncing back to win the second 21-18, but fell 18-16 in the third. Aziz and Mason moved up to the No. 3 position after their solid play and it continued as they won 21-17 and 21-15 to move to 5-1 as a pair. Minter and DeVido clinched the winning point once again as they eased to a 21-15 and 21-12 victory that moves their record to 7-1 as a pair. Schmidt and Evans remain one of the top pairs in the country as they are now 8-0 this year, winning over the Seahawks 21-17 and 21-13. Golichowski and Cantero were once again winners in the extra match, taking it in straight sets 21-13 and 23-21.

It was a solid start to the weekend for the Sailfish as they face their most difficult competition of the year tomorrow when they will face Florida Gulf Coast at 2 pm and Florida Atlantic at 4 pm. FGCU is receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll while the FAU Owls are ranked No. 12.
