DELAND, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team finished up play at the Stetson Invitational today by facing off against Florida Gulf Coast and the host's Stetson. The Sailfish have been testing themselves against DI competition that has been ranked or receiving votes all season long. PBA played a close match against the Eagles, falling 3-2 before falling to the No. 17 ranked Hatters 5-0.
Match 1: PBA - 2, FGCU - 3
The Sailfish faced FGCU for the second time this season. Having fallen to the Eagles 3-2 early in the year, the 'Fish suffered the same result again today. FGCU got the first point as they won the No. 5 position as
Gabriella Aziz and
Abigail Mason fell in straight sets 21-14, 21-17. PBA was able to get the next point when
Bailey Myott and
Olivia Finckel captured a big three-set win 21-15, 15-21, and 15-13.
Lyndzey Minter and
Abby DeVido led for most of their first set in the No. 2 match but they let the opening set get away and fell in the second as well 23-21, 21-15.
Julia Golichowski and
Karla Cantero paired up to play at the No. 3 position as they went down 21-10, 21-14. The Eagles had captured the three points they needed for the win but PBA's No. 1 pair of
Jazz Schmidt and
Lunden Evans took down yet another top pair, winning easily in two sets 21-13, 21-14.
Kayleigh Hall and
Lorrayne Silva played together in the extra match and dropped two close sets 23-21, 21-19.
Match 2: PBA - 0, SU - 5
The Sailfish faced their third ranked team of the season as they squared off with host school Stetson. The Sailfish were unable to take a match against the Hatters falling in straight sets in all five matches. Schmidt and Evans dropped just their third match of the season, all coming against the ranked teams PBA has played. They fell 21-15, 21-18 while Minter and DeVido fell 21-18, 21-15. Golichowski and Cantero dropped the No. 3 match 21-13, 21-15 while the No. 4 pair of Myott and Finckel weren't able to follow up their morning success falling 21-11, 21-15. Aziz and Mason played at the No. 5 position again and lost 21-16, 21-13 while Hall and Silva were the only tandem able to capture a victory in the extra match, winning 21-11, 18-11.
It is a tough stretch for the Sailfish as they have played six division one opponents in their last seven games where they have gone just 2-5. The road doesn't get any easier as up next they will have a doubleheader rematch against the FGCU Eagles in Fort Myers on March 23.
