Sailfish Sweep Opening Day at the Dolphin Duel

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team hit the road to compete in the Dolphin Duel tournament hosted by Jacksonville University this weekend. The Sailfish took down the hosts this morning 3-2 before taking out Erskine College 5-0 this afternoon. The two victories take the Sailfish to 4-0 on the season.

Match 1: PBA - 3, JU - 2

The Sailfish got off to a solid start as Gabriella Aziz and Abigail Mason teamed up at the No. 4 position for the first time this season and proceeded to roll to an easy two-set victory. They won the first set 21-9 before closing out their match by winning the second 21-10. The 'Fish went on to double their lead as Lyndzey Minter and Abby DeVido won a tight three-set match at the No. 2 position. After splitting two close sets, winning the first 22-20 and dropping the second 19-21, they came up clutch in the deciding set winning 15-9 to claim the match. The Dolphins got on the board at the No. 3 position as Emma Vann and Bailey Myott went down in two close sets. PBA's top tandem of Jazz Schmidt and Lunden Evans clinched the match for the Sailfish as they won 21-14 and 21-10 to clinch the winning third point. JU was victorious at the No. 5 position as Julia Golichowski and Karla Cantero fell 21-19 and 21-14. Kayleigh Hall and Lorrayne Silva took the extra match for PBA, bouncing back from dropping the first set 15-21 to win 21-19 and 15-8.

Match 2: PBA - 5 , EC - 0

After a tough opening match, the Sailfish cruised in their victory over Erskine 5-0. DeVido and Minter got the Sailfish off to a strong start winning in straight sets 21-12 and 21-11 at the No. 2 position. Aziz and Mason moved up to the No. 3 position after their impressive performance earlier in the day and won comfortably in two sets 21-10 and 21-7. Aziz and Mason are 2-0 together as a pair and each a perfect 4-0 as a whole on the season. Schmidt and Evans secured the match victory for the 'Fish by winning their No. 1 match 21-17 and 21-15 to move to 4-0 on the season. Vann and Myott bounced back from their defeat earlier against the Dolphins to win in straight sets while Silva and Hall moved up to the No. 5 position and won in three sets 21-17, 16-21, and 15-12 to finish off the sweep for the Sailfish. Cantero and Golichowski kept their good form in the extra match by winning in two sets 21-18 and 21-7.

The Sailfish have two more matches tomorrow to finish up play at the Dolphin Duel. They will face their toughest test of the season when they face Coastal Carolina at 10 am. The Chanticleers defeated Erskine 4-1 and Saint Leo 5-0 today. After facing the Chants in the morning, PBA will face Saint Leo for the second time this season after defeating the Lions 3-2 earlier this year.
