DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team competed in the Embry-Riddle Open over the weekend. This marks the first competition under first-year head coach Marc Murray. The Sailfish wrapped up the weekend with 14 singles victories and seven doubles wins.
Jasmine Williams went 2-0 on day one of singles action in the gold flight bracket, Williams defeated ERAU's Carla Cabero 6-2, 6-4 and FNU's Nadia Abad 6-1, 6-1.
Elvira Edstrom dropped her first match to ERAU's Jess Wira 7-5, 6-1. In her second match, Edstrom defeated FNU's Vanessa Simone 6-3, 6-1.PBA freshman Alina Hoerman defeated Simone in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 then dropped her second match to Wira 6-1 6-1.
Anabelle Robichaud defeated FNU's Paulina Jankun 6-1, 6-2 and was downed by ERAU's Alessia Tripadelli 6-1, 6-2. On day two of singles play, Edstrom earned a victory over ERAU's Kaylee Kirivong 6-1, 6-3. Williams dropped her singles match 6-1, 6-2, and Robichaud was downed 6-4, 6-3.
Greta Langiu faced one singles match in the gold flight bracket and fell in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.
The Sailfish had their most singles success in the blue flight bracket. PBA freshman Giovana Kelm went undefeated in singles play. Kelm picked up wins over FNU's Emerald Cooke (6-1, 6-3) and FNU's Fabiola Bserini 6-3, 6-3 and FNU's Karyna Krykunenko 6-1, 6-0 on day two. Langiu went 2-0 on Saturday with victories over FNU's Karyna Krykunenko 6-3, 6-0 and FNU's Sofia Pera 6-3, 7-5. Jelseyvette Croes defeated Rachel Swan in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 for her first match. Croes dropped her second match to Kirivong 6-2, 6-0. Avery Brothers split day one of the singles competition as she dropped her first match to Bserini 6-4, 6-4 and defeated Cooke 6-4, 6-1. On Sunday, Croes beat Cooke 6-0 in consecutive sets. Brothers was defeated by Pera 7-5, 7-5. Langiu, Croes, Brothers, and Kelm went a combined 8-3 in the blue flight bracket. Â
The Sailfish went 8-3 in doubles play. Four PBA tandems competed in the doubles gold flight bracket. Each pair faced one match on Saturday with two on Sunday. On day one, PBA's
Cecilia Peroni and Langiu defeated Krykunenco and Bserini 6-0.
Alessia Passerini and Wiliams were defeated by Cabero and Wira 6-2. Edstrom and Robichaud beat Tripadelli and Sabrina Ehrenfort 6-4. The group of Croes and Kelm beat FNU's Belan Metanzas and Michel Hurtado 6-0. On day two of the doubles competition, Peroni and Langiu went 1-1 with a 7-5 loss and a 6-1 victory over Cooke and Jankun. Passerini and Williams had a bye for their first match of day two. The PBA pair defeated Krykunenko and Bserini 6-1. Croes and Kelm won their first match on a tiebreaker 7-6(10.) They dropped their final match of the weekend 6-0. Edstrom and Robichuad went 1-1 on the final day. They defeated Sofia Perra and Salome Sierra 6-1 and dropped their second match 7-6(5.)Â
