TAVARES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team continued play at the AVCA Small College Championship today as Gold Bracket play began. The Sailfish were the three seed in the bracket play and a path to the championship would require three wins. The Sailfish took down Saint Leo in their opening match of the day but came up short in the semifinals against two-seed Spring Hill 3-2.
Match 1: PBA 3, Saint Leo 0
With the potential of playing three-straight matches in six hours, the Sailfish and Lions played until one side claimed the three necessary points to win the match and move to the semifinals. The top three teams for the Sailfish took care of business to close out the Lions and advance.
Jazz Schmidt and
Lunden Evans won the matchup at position No. 1 in straight sets 21-14, 21-12 while
Abby DeVido and
Lyndzey Minter won both of their sets 22-20.
Emma Pieper and
Olivia Finckel rolled at position No. 3 for the 'Fish as they were victorious 21-10, 21-11 and PBA moved on to face Spring Hill.
Match 2: PBA 2, SHC 3
The Sailfish faced off against the Badgers who received a bye into the semifinals as the number two seed in the tournament. Unfortunately, the Sailfish had their season ended as Spring Hill won a close match 3-2. The Sailfish and the Badgers split matchups at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions as Schmidt and Evans pulled out a third set 15-10 after splitting the opening sets 21-15, 13-21, and Devido and Minter fell in two close tight sets 21-18, 21-19. The No. 4 team of
Jessica Nodell and
Sydney Wagner fell in two extended sets 24-22, 25-23 while the No. 5 team of
Julia Golichowski and
Gabriella Aziz were impressive winning 22-20, 21-14. With the match tied 2-2, it all came down to Pieper and Finckel at the No. 3 position. They pulled out an extended opening set 23-21, but the Badgers side battled back to win the next two sets 21-17, 15-11 to claim the match victory and advance to the finals.
The Sailfish season comes to an end as they finish the year with a 17-7 record. In just their second season as a varsity program at PBA, the Sailfish made it to the semifinals of the AVCA Championship and took down No. 20 ranked Florida Gulf Coast in the regular season.   Â
