MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis team competed in the Buccaneers Invitational at Barry University over the weekend.
The most successful Sailfish on the court in singles competition was Erik Carlsten. Carlsten advanced to the finals in Flight D. The Sweden native beat Barry's Vlad Popescu 6-4, 3-6 (15-13). Carlsten added a victory in the semi-finals over FSC"s Matteo Feggi, 7-5 in consecutive sets. Carlsten's run ended in the finals at the hands of KU's Burt Nouws. Carlsten dropped a two-set match to KU's Burt Nouws 6-2, 6-3.
Flight A featured PBA's Umberto Rosi against Keiser's Yasir Kilani. Rosi dropped the match in two sets 6-2,6-3. Roberto Binaghi and Jorge Santamaria were both seeded in Flight B. Santamaria fell 6-2 in consecutive sets to KU's Geronimo Barrios in the first round. Binaghi defeated Phillip Lemke from Flagler College, 7-5, 6-2. Binaghi's run ended in the semi-finals when he dropped a match in two sets to KU's Charlie Zick 6-2,6-3. Binaghi won third place over Florida Southern's Chris Fok Kow 6-4, 6-2.
Santamaria was victorious in the consolation bracket. Santamaria defeated Fok Kow 6-3 in consecutive sets. In the finals of the consolation bracket, Santamaria beat Lemke 6-2, 7-5.
Rodolpho Hasegawa faced off with KU's Fred Orevad. Orevad advanced after two sets 7-5, 6-1. Luis Eduardo Platas picked up a hard-fought victory over FC's Jacopo Denitto 7-6(5), 6-4. Platas was eliminated in the semi-finals from FSC' Oscar Sohl 6-3, 7-5.
The Sailfish had three tandems dominate in doubles competition. Flight A featured Carlsten and Hasegawa while Flight B had the PBA pair of Binaghi,
Juan Fernandez and Rosi with Santamaria. Fernandez and Binaghi defeated three opposing tandems and finished in first place.
