MIAMI SHORES, Fla- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team competed at the Barry Invitational over the weekend. The Sailfish faced off against tennis players from Barry, Keiser, Flagler College, and Hillsborough Community College.
Six Sailfish matched up in singles competition on day one. Four of the matches were between Barry and PBA. PBA's
Verena Weindl dropped a two-set match to BU's Kim Moosbacher 6-1,6-0. BU's Daniela Farfan defeated
Elvira Edstrom 6-0 in consecutive sets. BU's Clara Versier took a two-set victory over Alessia Passerini 6-1,6-3. PBA's
Frida Alsterhem fell 6-2 in consecutive sets to BU's Ajda Bukovec.
Other matchups included HCC's Alicia Gomez versus
Alisa Grachova. Gomez defeated Grachova in two sets 6-4, 6-0. PBA's Jasmin Williams dropped a hard-fought three-set match to HCC's Camila Mitolo 4-6, 6-1, 10-2.
Three tandems for PBA competed in doubles competition. Weindl and Edstrom fell to KU's Sovalenbo 6-4. The pair of Williams and Passerini lost to HCC's Arina Gamretkaia and Oliva Pezo 6-0. Alsterhem and Grachova dropped their match to KU's Anique Engelbrecht and Miriam Medina-Cardena 6-3.
The 'Fish picked up two wins on the court on day two of the tournament. PBA's Alsterhem pulled out a tough three-set victory over FC's Addison Sky Breunich 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. The PBA pair of Willams and Passerini knocked off BU's Versier and Bukovec 6-3.
In Saturday's singles competition, Weindl dropped a two-set match to FC's Alessandra Traub 6-2, 7-5. FC's Ebba Rosberg defeated Edstrom 7-6(5), 6-1. Passerini fell in a three-set match to FC's Gianna Rosato 4-6, 6-4, 10-3. In doubles competition, BU's Farfan and Moosbacher defeated Weindle and Edstrom 6-2. HCC's pair of Mitolo and Esmee Andresen pulled out a close match against Alsterhem and Grachova 6-4.
The final day of the tournament featured five singles matches for the 'Fish. Alsterhem picked up her second win of the weekend and beat KU's Medina-Cardena in two sets 6-2, 6-1.
HCC's Mbali Langa defeated Weindl 6-3 in consecutive sets. Passerini dropped a very close match to KU's Engelbrecht. Passerini took the first set 6-3, dropped the second set 1-6. Engelbrecht pulled out a close third set 10-8. KU's Florencia Araya beat Edstrom 6-4, 6-3. HCC's Pezo defeated Grachova 7-5, 6-2.
Doubles competition on Sunday featured three matchups between PBA and Flagler College. Alsterhem and Grachova won a tight 7-6 battle over Rosato and Florencia Massarado Brain. FC's Ebba and Breunich beat Weindl and Edstrom 6-4. PBA's Passerini and Williams fell 6-3 to FC's Traub and Anikka Nissen.
