MACON, Ga. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team looked to continue their perfect start to their inaugural campaign while competing in the Mercer Invitational today against Chattanooga and UNC Wilmington. The Sailfish first knocked off the Chattanooga Mocs 5-0 before defeating the UNC Seahawks 3-2.
Match 1: PBA 5, UTC, 0
The Sailfish began the day by facing the Chattanooga Mocs in a matchup of programs who are competing in their first seasons as a varsity program. It was a dominate performance for the 'Fish as they swept the Mocs and won every match in two sets.
Leah Woods and
Taylor Keating started the winning form for the Sailfish by winning their match in two tightly contest sets 23-21, 21-18. The duo tandem of
Coleen Sieng and
Ally Bottenfield stayed perfect on the season, rolling to a 21-13, 21-11 victory.
Jazz Schmidt and
Lunden Evans won the match that clinched the best of five series defeating their opponents 21-6, 21-13.
Gabriella Aziz and
Kayleigh Hall won 21-13, 21-15 while
Lyndzey Minter and
Sydney Wagner were victorious 21-16, 21-12.
Match 2: PBA 3, UNCW 2
PBA faced arguably their toughest test of the early season as they faced off against their second DI opponent of the day in UNC Wilmington. The tandem of Hall and Aziz fell in a three set match before Bottenfield and Sieng won their third set 15-13 to level up the best of five series.
Emma Pieper and
Jessica Nodell were defeated 14-21, 12-21. With the match on the line Wagner and Minter battled through a tough three setter and came out on top 15-13 in the final set. With the Sailfish and the Seahawks locked up at 2 wins a piece, Evans and Schmidt over powered their opponents 21-14, 21-9 to give PBA the 3-2 victory.
Up next, the 'Fish will face Mercer on Sunday at 9 am looking to sweep the weekend and win the Mercer Invitational.
