WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic beach volleyball team began its 2020 season today by hosting Webber and Saint Leo at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The Sailfish are in their first season under coach
Christina Matthews and began their inaugural season 2-0 and defeating Webber and Saint Leo by the score of 3-2.
MATCH 1: PBA 3, WIU 2Â
The Sailfish battle Webber early this morning with the doubles pair of
Sydney Wagner and
Lyndzey Minter winning their match 21-14, 21-9.
Emma Pieper and
Jessica Nodell fell in a tightly contested three-set match while
Jazz Schmidt and
Lunden Evans won in two sets 21-15, 21-13. The tandem of
Ally Bottenfield and
Coleen Sieng clinched the Sailfish victory by handily winning their match 21-13, 21-15. Webber was able to capture the fifth game over
Gabriella Aziz and
Kayleigh Hall to reduce the defeat to 3-2.Â
Match 2: PBA 3, Saint Leo 2
PBA was able to sit and watch the team they had just defeated, Webber, take down the Saint Leo Lions in the second matchup of the day by a score of 3-2 before taking their chance against the Lions and winning by the same score. The duo team of Wagner and Minter dominated their third set 15-5, while Pieper and Nodell were able to pull out their match in three sets as well. The Lions fought back getting three-set victories over Hall and Aziz, and Schmidt and Evans both in three sets. The Sailfish duo of Bottenfield and Sieng were able to wrap their match up in two sets 21-18, 21-16 to give the 'Fish their second victory of the day and win the tri-match.
Coming off the first beach volleyball matches in Sailfish history, PBA will take its 2-0 record to Macon, Georgia on Feb. 29 to face Tennessee Chattanooga, UNC Wilmington, and Mercer. Â
