MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball defeated Barry University on Friday night in the first game of the weekend conference series in Miami Shores. The Sailfish (17-16) came back to tie the game in the eighth inning, overcoming an early lead from the Bucs (21-11), before going ahead in the top of the ninth and winning the game by a final score of 4-3.
The Sailfish got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1 when Brandon Smith singled up the middle to score Brandon Seltzer. The Bucs scored in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead before scoring again in the fifth to go up 3-2.
The Sailfish did not go away without a fight as they battled back in the eighth inning. The scoring got started when Seltzer hit a ball deep into the night sky over the left field fence to put the game at 3-2. Connor Rowland reached on an error by Barry and then Riley Herold drove him in on a single through the left side tying things up 3-3.
In the top of the ninth PBA manufactured a run starting with a single by Derek Schwimer followed by a single by Sean Houck that moved Schwimer to third base. Danny Tufariello then hit a sacrifice fly on a deep fly ball to centerfield allowing Schwimer to score for the go ahead run.
In the bottom of the ninth the Sailfish turned to Orsen Josephina to close the door on the Bucs. Josephina recorded his fifth save with two strikeouts and a fly out to end the game.
The Sailfish got another solid pitching performance from starter Mitchell Carroll who pitched 6.1 innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Carroll kept the Sailfish in the game before Coach Kent Bottenfield turned the ball over to reliever Heath Hawkins in the seventh inning. Hawkins pitched 1.2 innings striking out two and earned his fourth win of the year.
The 'Fish recorded 11 hits in the game with Seltzer, Smith, and Herold responsible for two apiece. Seltzer had a double and a homerun in the game.
The Sailfish will return to action tomorrow Apr. 6 against Barry in a double header starting at 1 p.m.
