WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball took down Nova Southeastern on Friday night in the opening game of the Sunshine State Conference weekend series. The Sailfish (14-12) got out to an early lead on the Sharks (18-7) and never looked back as they won the game 6-2.
The first run of the game came in the first inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brandon Seltzer that allowed Derek Schwimer to scamper home to put the Sailfish up 1-0. PBA was not satisfied with only the one run as Danny Tufariello hit his first homerun of the night to bring home Riley Herold and Ramon Machado to put the score at 4-0 after one inning in favor of the 'Fish.
Tufariello was not done on the night as he hit a solo homerun in the fourth and again in the sixth accounting for five of the six runs driven in on the night.
Six runs from the Sailfish offense was all the pitching staff needed Friday night as Mitchell Carroll tossed 5.2 innings in his start giving up only two runs on six hits while striking out five. The performance earned Carroll his fourth win of the season to put him at 4-2 on the year.
Head Coach Kent Bottonfield turned to Orsen Josephina in the sixth and Josephina delivered as he pitched 3.1 innings giving up only one hit while striking out seven of the 12 batters he faced only giving up one hit and one walk. The performance awarded Josephina his third save of the season.
Other Sailfish to collect hits tonight were Machado who had two hits and Schwimer who had one.
The Sailfish will return to the diamond tomorrow Mar. 23 with first pitch scheduled at 3 pm as they continue the series against Nova Southeastern.
