WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball defeated Southern Connecticut State on Friday evening, as they scored three runs in the second and rode a strong pitching performance from righty Mitchell Carroll to defeat the Owls 6-1 at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park. The Sailfish win snaps the 5-game losing streak and the 'Fish improve to 3-5 on the year.
Carroll (Win, 2-1) cruised through the SCSU lineup early on in Friday's game, and the Sailfish offense came alive in the second, as Rowland started things with a one-out double to deep right center. Danny Tufariello followed with an RBI single, and came around to score on an Andreas Papageorge double. The final run of the inning came around on a Mike Santaromita single to center field.
The Owls got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, as Carroll lost his command a bit and a run scored on a RBI hit by pitch. Heath Hawkins entered with the bases loaded and one out and escaped the jam without any further damage to hold the Sailfish lead at 3-1.
The 'Fish added a run in the bottom of the seventh as Brandon Smith picked up an RBI single to left field with one out. PBA added two more in the eighth as Sean Houck drove in a run with a single and Riley Herold drove in the sixth PBA run on a sacrifice fly.
Hawkins worked 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and Joey Hennessey picked up his first save of the season as the junior recorded the final four outs of the ballgame.
Herold, Smith, and Tufariello picked up two hits each for the Sailfish as the 'Fish outhit the owls 11 to six in the game.
The Sailfish and Owls will play again on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park.
