WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis opened the fall season this past weekend at the Sailfish Invitational. The 'Fish recorded two third-place finishes in doubles as well as third and fourth-place finishes in single flights.
Yuliia Russu and Vanessa Buchbinder won their opener of the tournament 8-5 over Furmaniak/Jurkova before falling in their next match against Simnova/Krauskova, 8-3. Russu and Buchbinder secured a third-place finish for the No. 1 doubles flight by defeating Vicens Miquel/Bukina, 8-4.
Bella Mermersky and Beatriz Windmuller started their tournament with a close 9-8 (4) win over Ladera/Shimoni. The sophomore/freshman combo lost to Gauthier/Jedrychowski 8-2 but recovered to finish third place in the No. 2 doubles fight with an 8-5 victory over Wolleschak/Mzibri.
On the singles side of the weekend, Nicole Reich and Elvira Edstrom competed in the third-place match of the No. 3 Singles flight. Returning sophomore Reich won the match with 6-2 and 6-3 sets. Estefani Fernandez defeated teammate Windmuller 6-3, 6-0 to secure fifth-place in the No. 4 singles flight.
PBA travels to Lakeland, Fla. this weekend for the ITA South Regional.
