WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball split a doubleheader with Barry University on Saturday, dropping the first game 6-4 and rebounding to win the finale 6-5. The Sailfish win the series against the Buccaneers and improve to 9-9 in SSC play. The Sailfish now sit 20-16 overall, and will play Tuesday night against St. Thomas in Miami Gardens at 6 p.m.
Game One: Barry 6, PBA 4
Palm Beach Atlantic broke into the scoring column first on Saturday, as Connor Rowland reached on an error, stole second and third, and came around to score on a throwing error by the Buccaneer catcher.
Barry took a lead of their own in the third inning, as Jonathan Quintana hit a two-run homer to left, giving the Bucs a 2-1 lead.
The Sailfish tied the game on a balk in the fourth, and took a lead as Eddie Vicinanza singled to right field, scoring Evan Dougherty.
Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the Bucs tied the game with a run in the fifth and scored three in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead.
Jake Summey hit a solo-homer in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-4, but that is all the Sailfish could manage as they lost 6-4.
Lance Fry turned in a great start for the Sailfish, as the junior pitched six strong innings on the afternoon, allowing three runs (two earned) on just four hits, while striking out six Bucs.
Vicinanza was the only hitter with multiple hits in the game, as the senior finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Game Two: PBA 6, Barry 5
It was Barry that scored first in the series finale, as they plated a run in the first off Sailfish starter Mitchell Carroll.
The 'Fish answered in the second inning, as Rowland reached base on a single, and came around to score on a Hakeem Rhodes RBI double to left field.
Barry retook the lead in the fourth inning, as it was Quintana again homering to put the Bucs ahead 2-1.
PBA took the lead in the see-saw game in the fifth inning, as A.J. Puigcerver and Danny Tufariello singed, and both scored on a Ryan Johnson single to center.
The score remained 3-2 'Fish until the eighth, when Paul Salata hit a pinch-hit three-run homer to left-center field to put the Buccaneers up 5-3.
The 'Fish took no time to answer, as Johnson and Rowland doubled to lead off the eighth, and Summey singled up the middle with two outs to tie the game at 5.
After a scoreless ninth by Joey Hennessey, the Sailfish walked it off in the bottom half, as Rowland picked up his fourth hit of the game, an RBI single to left to give the 'Fish the series victory.
Carroll earned a no-decision on the day, as the junior worked into the sixth, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four.
Six hitters picked up multiple hits in the game for the 'Fish, as Rowland led the way with four while Johnson added three of his own.
