MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball lost a non-conference game to St. Thomas on Tuesday, falling to the Bobcats by an 11-5 score. The Sailfish drop to 20-17 with the loss while St. Thomas improves to 39-4 on the year with the victory at Mainieri Field, in a game that started late after a 90-minute rain delay.
The Sailfish offense got off to a strong start, as Jake Summey laced the first pitch of the game for a double to left field. With two outs in the inning, Connor Rowland singled up the middle to plate Summey, and came around to score on a double from senior Evan Dougherty to make the score 3-0 in favor of the 'Fish.
The Bobcats got two runs back on a two-out double in the second inning, and after Dougherty drove in another run in the top of the fourth inning, St. Thomas tied the game at four in the bottom half.
STU scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead, and really opened things up with a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
The Sailfish got a run back as Hakeem Rhodes hit a home run to left field to lead off the sixth inning. Unfortunately for the Sailfish that was the last run the offense could muster on the evening. St. Thomas added three more runs late to win by the 11-5 score.
Summey finished the night 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles. Dougherty was the only other Sailfish with multiple hits in the game, as he finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and also reached on a hit-by-pitch.
The Sailfish will now head to Tampa for a three-game Sunshine State Conference weekend series against the No. 4 ranked University of Tampa Spartans.
