Men's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Competition

FLORENCE, S.C. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis bounced back with a solid showing on Saturday at the Florence City Tournament, defeating Augusta and Mount Olive to finish 5th in the tournament.

The Sailfish took down Augusta 5-0 in the morning session before responding with a 5-1 win in the afternoon over the Trojans of Mount Olive. Both matches were played only until completion in the tournament format.

In the first match of the day the 'Fish swept the doubles matches with Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva picking up the biggest victory at No. 2, 8-1. Bernardo Ferreira and Rodolfo Hasegawa were winners at No. 1, 8-6 over Alan Vilaro and Gaspard Mathieu. At No. 3 it was Philipp Hoffmann and Carlose Niemeyer who were winners, also 8-6.

In singles play the Sailfish picked up a resounding victory at No. 2 as Hoffmann won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 over Vilaro. Hasegawa was also a winner, leading 6-3, 5-3 before his opponent Moritz Gehlhaus retired. De Silva was also just a game away from a victory in the second set as the match concluded.

In the second match of the day the 'Fish led just 2-1 after doubles as Zarazua/de Silva and Hoffmann/Niemeyer both won tight matches. At No. 2 Zarazua and de Silva won 8-6 with the duo of Hoffmann and Niemeyer winning at No. 3, 9-7.

In singles play Zarazua was a straight sets winner at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3 as his victory clinched the match for PBA. Hasegawa improved to 2-0 on the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 while de Silva also picked up a win, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.

The 'Fish are back in action on Wednesday as they host NCAA Division III Gustavus Adolphus at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center at 4 p.m.
