WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball picked up another region win on Tuesday night, as they defeated Florida Tech 3-2 at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park. The Sailfish used strong pitching and some timely hitting on the night, as they struck out 10 Panther hitters.
FIT got on the scoreboard first Tuesday, as Vincenzo Catanza doubled to left-center field off Sailfish starting pitcher Orsen Josephina in the second inning which plated Ryan Sinzenich. The 'Fish tied the game in the bottom half of the second, as Danny Tufariello hit a hard ground ball which was misplayed by the Panther defense and plated Riley Herold.
The Sailfish gained the lead in the third inning when Mike Santaromita and Connor Rowland both doubled to right field, giving the 'Fish a 2-1 lead. Josephina had settled down nicely on the mound for the Sailfish, but a Sailfish error led to the Panthers tying the game up at two in the fifth inning, and chased Josephina from the game with two outs in the fifth.
Tyler Hawks entered for the Sailfish and was very sharp on the night. Hawks threw 2.1 innings in relief of Josephina, allowing just one infield hit and striking out three batters.
The Sailfish came to bat in the eighth inning with the score still tied 2-2. Jake Summey led off with a single and came around to score the go-ahead run on a Herold fielder's choice.
Reigning SSC Pitcher of the Week Mikhail Cazenave closed out the game on the mound for the 'Fish, throwing the final two innings without allowing a baserunner and picking up the win. Cazenave struck out three batters in the two innings and improves to 4-2 on the season.
Rowland had a nice night at the plate as the junior went 3-for-4 and drove in a run for the Sailfish. Summey joined with a multi-hit performance as the outfielder went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Sailfish will return to action this weekend as they will host Embry-Riddle in a SSC weekend series beginning Friday, March 2 at 6 p.m.
