VALDOSTA, Ga. – After having their first fall tournament cancelled due to Hurricane Irma, the Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team hit the courts this past weekend for the ITA South Region Tournament, hosted by Valdosta State University.
The Sailfish only took four players to the singles and doubles tournament, returners
Taylor Conti and
Michaela Mignemi along with newcomers Isabella Mermersky and Laura Andersen.
Mermersky was the lone Sailfish to pick up a singles win in the main draw, beating Anke Poncelet of Valdosta State 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 64. She was knocked out by Diana Vlad of West Florida in the next round, 7-5, 6-1.
Despite losing her first match in the main draw – 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (8) – Andersen bounced back in the consolation draw to advance to the semifinals. She picked up two wins, both in straight sets along the way before falling 6-2, 6-2 in the semis to Erin Egoroff of Florida Tech.
In the doubles portion, Conti and Mermersky picked up the lone victory for the 'Fish, taking down Katie Dyson and Carlye Goldman from Rollins, 8-6.
PBA is back in action this coming weekend as they host the inaugural Women's Sailfish Invitational, Saturday and Sunday at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Cennter.
