Men's Tennis Competes At ITA Tournament

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis team took four players to the annual ITA South Region Singles and Doubles Tournament over the weekend. This year's event was hosted by Valdosta State University.

In singles action Pato Zarazua and Philipp Hoffmann both reached the Round of 32, with Hoffmann knocking off the No. 2 seed in the draw. The sophomore from Germany defeated Juan Couder from Embry-Riddle after dropping the first set 6-3. Hoffmann bounced back to win the second 6-4 before taking the third set 1-0 (5). Hoffmann went on to the next round where he lost to Emile Le Terrijer from Delta State, 1-6, 6-3, 11-9.

Zarazua entered the tournament as the No. 13 seed and took his opening match 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) against Juan Motta of West Florida. In the next round he was knocked out by Lucas Sanchez in straight sets. Thomas Salmon also finished the tournament 1-1 after taking down Mason Vice 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. He went on to lose to Serdar Bojadjiev from West Florida in the Round of 64 in straight sets.

In doubles action Salmon and Zarazua were winners over Atakan Gezer and Sami Kirberg from Rollins in the opening round, 8-2, but were knocked off by No. 4 seeded Carlos Gomez and Vivien Versier from Barry, 8-4 in the next round. Hoffmann and Stanislav Feofilov also competed in doubles play, losing to Florian Clemares and Jose Porfirio – the eventual doubles champions – 8-4 in their first match.

The Sailfish will take a weekend off before heading to Winter Park, Fla. beginning on Oct. 6 for the Varner Memorial Invitational.
