CARROLTON, Ga. – No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic (14-3) volleyball picked up a pair of 3-0 wins on the first day of the South Region Crossover, defeating Alabama-Huntsville in straight sets, 25-14, 25-19, 28-26 and No. 18 West Florida, 25-20, 26-24, 25-21, on Friday. The Sailfish will finish the weekend on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against Valdosta State. Teams representing the Sunshine State Conference were 18-1 against teams from the Gulf South on day one.
West Florida Match
Faith Rohn led the charge once again, picking up 16 kills and hitting .438 as the team posted a .306 attack against the Argos. Ally Rohn added nine kills as well as a double-double of 19 assists and a team-high 12 digs. West Florida managed just a .207 attack on the night as the ‘Fish again produced 11 total blocks.
PBA gained control in the first set with a 6-3 run after the Argos pulled to within one at 6-5. The ‘Fish withstood a short run as UWF cut the margin to 13-11 but PBA responded with four straight as Faith Rohn put down two kills during the run.
The Sailfish had to fight back in the second after trailing for most of the early going. The ‘Fish overcame a 14-11 deficit to tie the set at 14-14 as a kill from Stephany Brown evened the score. West Florida went ahead by two at 23-21 but the ‘Fish responded again, taking five of the final six points with three kills and two attack errors from the Argos.
Brown and Emma Ballantyne each collected five kills as did Sarah Ragland, who also led the team with eight total blocks. Abby Palkert added three blocks to go along with six kills. Brown and Ballantyne also had three blocks apiece. Alexandra Roberts added 18 assists and six digs as Rachael Holehouse collected 11 digs and eight assists.
Alabama-Huntsville Match
The ‘Fish were led offensively by Faith Rohn who registered 13 kills in the match, along with a .216 attack percentage. The team put up a .306 attack for the match while the Chargers hit just .056. Ally Rohn hit .412 with eight kills, 31 assists and five digs. She also recorded two total blocks.
Sarah Ragland posted seven kills along with nine total blocks including two block assists with Stephany Brown and one solo block to turn a 26-25 deficit in the third set into a 28-26 win. The third set was by far the closest set with 10 ties and six lead changes. There were only seven ties and two lead changes in the first two sets combined.
The Chargers took a 6-4 lead early in set one before the ‘Fish reeled off five straight to take a 9-6 advantage. The lead quickly ballooned to eight at 16-8 as Emma Ballantyne picked up two kills during the 6-0 run. She finished with eight kills and a .357 attack.
The defense posted 11 total blocks and 41 digs. Ragland led the team with nine blocks as Brown was in on five. Rachael Holehouse was credited with 15 digs to lead the team. Susie Forbes chipped in with nine digs
