CARROLTON, Ga.- After a slow start saw the Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball drop their first set to the University of West Georgia on Saturday evening the Sailfish suddenly awoke. The pesky play of UWG as part of the South Region Crossover motivated the Sailfish to play at their best for the rest of the match as they rattled off three consecutive wins to take out the host-Wolves by a 3-1 score.
The PBA (20-3) victory coupled with their two wins on Friday pushes the Sailfish winning streak to 10 matches which marks their longest win streak of the season after winning nine in a row earlier during the campaign.
Palm Beach Atlantic will now begin a stretch of four home matches surrounded by road trips to nearby Lynn University (Oct. 26) and Northwood University (Nov. 2) over the next few weeks.
The match on Saturday certainly didn’t begin how the Sailfish would have hoped after producing two sweeps in their two matches on Friday over the likes of the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Nova Southeastern University.
After a 25-23 defeat in the first set saw the Sailfish limited to a .200 team hitting mark the ‘Fish exploded for a .571 hitting percentage in the second set as they pounded UWG for a 25-8 score. The momentum for the PBA team continued into the final two sets as they rode 25-18 and 25-22 wins to close out the 3-1 victory.
With the healthy return of several other key attackers the past few weeks the ‘Fish have not had to rely as much lately on the sheer dominance put forth by sophomore outside-hitter Faith Rohn during the first several weeks of the season. That doesn’t mean she can’t still do it when her team needs it.
Rohn had a huge match on Saturday as the 5’7” hitter pounded away kill after kill against the Wolves (10-9) and finished with a match-high 23 kills to go with 13 digs. The former Cedar Lake, Ind. product put together a team-high 52 attacks in the match and helped PBA overcome their slow start.
Backing up Rohn’s solid performance was senior Christina Alessi and Elly Raush with 11 kills each while Stephany Brown and Emma Ballantyne chipped in with six and five kills respectively.
The big PBA front-line put together 17 total blocks as a team with Brown leading the way with six blocks.
Melissa Buckingham led all PBA players with 23 digs while Rachael Holehouse contributed 16 digs and two service aces.
Becca Acevedo dished out 52 assists in the win to lead the offense.
West Georgia did not have a double-digit kills performer however Melissa Holt led all players in the match with 32 digs.
PBA will take on Northwood University at home on Tuesday, Oct. 22nd with it being Chick-fil-A Scholar-Athlete Night at the Rubin Arena beginning with a first serve of 7 pm.
