CARROLTON, Ga.- The Sailfish volleyball team began the South Region Crossover Tournament on Friday afternoon with a pair of 3-0 sweeps at the hands of the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Nova Southeastern University as the Palm Beach Atlantic ladies embarked on the campus of the University of West Georgia. The pair of wins improves the Sailfish record to 22-3 on the season.
The ‘Fish will wrap up play at the tournament on Saturday afternoon with a showdown against the host-Wolves of UWG at approximately 5:30 pm. The two wins continue to extend PBA’s win streak as they have now won their last nine matches including most of their contests matching the team up against NCAA South Region opponents.
Match One (PBA vs. University of Alabama-Huntsville)
Although official statistics are not yet available the Sailfish were able to take out the Chargers in relatively easy fashion as they rattled off three consecutive wins of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-16.
Christina Alessi began what would be another big day for the right-side hitter as she smashed 10 kills on 24 attempts while sophomore Faith Rohn also produced solid totals of 11 kills on 36 attempts.
Becca Acevedo continued her hard play with 31 assists while chipping in with three service aces and Melissa Buckingham contributed 15 digs to pace the defensive work by the Sailfish.
Alessi did her usual good work at the net with five blocks while Emma Ballantyne and Stephany Brown each added in three blocks.
Match Two (PBA vs. Nova Southeastern)
Taking on the Sharks for the second time this season the Sailfish managed another 3-0 sweep with strong showings in each set as they posted wins of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-11 and hit .358 as a team.
Rohn once again led the team in kills with 11 as she posted a solid .333 hitting mark to go along with 11 digs for yet another double-double for the Hoosier state native. Alessi did her damage on minimal attacks as she posted nine kills with just one error on 13 total attacks for a robust .615 hitting percentage.
Brown also dominated at the net as the 6’2” Tampa, Fla. product finished with eight kills on only 13 attacks for a .538 hitting mark.
Elly Raush and Emma Ballantyne added in six and five kills respectively.
Buckingham posted her second-straight 15 dig performance while Rachael Holehouse chipped in seven digs.
Acevedo finished with 35 assists and two more service aces as PBA rolled to victory.
Sydney Cook led the hitting efforts of the Sharks with 11 kills while Katie Pyles contributed 17 assists.
