Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After welcoming in some top talent from the NCAA Division II ranks to the friendly confines of the Rubin Arena over the past weekend for the annual Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic, the Sailfish volleyball team took a short trip on Tuesday to West Palm Beach neighbor Northwood University. The Sailfish were dominant from the start and came through with a 3-0 sweep thanks to the full length of the roster as they defeated the Seahawks 25-9, 25-12, and 25-13.
Head coach Bob White was able to see playing time for nearly his full squad as the Fish finished the night with a team attacking percentage of .500 (39 kills, six errors, 66 attacks). On the other side the Seahawks were making their season debut and finished the evening with an attacking percentage of .053 (15 kills, 12 errors, 57 attacks).
Freshman Elly Raush and junior Christina Alessi paced the potent PBA attack with Raush knocking down 12 kills on just 15 attacks (.800 attacking percentage) while Alessi was nearly just as efficient with 11 kills in 14 attacks (.786 attacking percentage).
The team was able to see important court time for freshman setter Alex Marszalek as she teamed with starter Becca Acevedo for a solid setting duo. Marszalek concluded her night with 13 assists and three service aces while Acevedo added in 23 assists and two service aces.
Melissa Buckingham and Mariela Quesada anchored a strong defense showing with Buckingham managing nine digs and Quesada producing seven digs to go with her six kills in limited action.
Jennifer Vasquez led Northwood with four kills while Christina Ruggeri added nine assists.
The Fish will now focus on another busy weekend ahead as they will play four matches in two days at the USC-Aiken Invitational in Aiken, S.C. The team will begin play on Friday, September 7th at 1 pm versus Flagler College.
