JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- After a pair of sweeps on Friday in the first day of competition at the Carson Newman College Tournament, the Sailfish volleyball team completed the task again on day two with a pair of 3-0 wins on Saturday. The Fish proved solid in both matches as they pushed their season win streak to 10 matches with wins over the University of Montevallo and Lincoln Memorial University.

The ten match win streak also includes 27 straight sets won by Palm Beach Atlantic dating back to their come-from-behind 3-2 win over then-No. 15-ranked Flagler College last weekend in the opening match of the USC-Aiken Tournament.

Now 12-2 on the season, the Fish will break away from tournament play over the next several weeks as they will welcome in a number of opponents to the Rubin Arena. They will also host their own tournament on October 5-6 when they invite four teams for the annual Pepsi Bash at the Beach Tournament.

Match One (PBA vs. University of Montevallo)

The first match on Saturday pitted the Fish against a University of Montevallo Falcons squad from Alabama who is yet another NCAA South Regional opponent for the Fish in their quest to tally more in-region matches.

The Falcons (6-6) would prove no match for the Sailfish as the Floridians posted a dominating .341 team hitting percentage on their way to 25-15, 25-14, and 25-20 set victories.

Senior Mariela Quesada dominated the match for PBA with a match-high 13 kills on only 22 attacks for a superb .545 attacking percentage. Quesada also proved strong with her serve as she led PBA with six service aces.

Christina Alessi and Rachel Jones also got into the act with nine and eight kills respectively. Jones boasted a .538 attacking percentage for the match while Alessi led the efforts at the net with five block assists.

Melissa Buckingham gave her team a lift once again from the libero position with 16 digs while Becca Acevedo set up the offense with 27 assists.

Match Two (PBA vs. Lincoln Memorial University)

The day’s second match and fourth of the tournament placed the Fish in a matchup against Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University who entered play with a record of 7-3.

The first two sets proved to be a good fight from LMU as PBA edged the Railsplitters 25-22 and 25-23 before cruising in the third set with a 25-13 win.

The PBA defense would once again lead to solid offense as they shook off a solid hitting effort from LMU in the first set (.303) to limit their opportunities in the second (.143) and third (-.083) sets respectively.

PBA’s offense on the other hand was a model of consistency as they produced hitting percentages between .205 and .250 for the three sets.

The one-two punch of Quesada and Alessi proved to be the answer up front once again for PBA with Quesada tallying 14 kills and Alessi adding in 13 kills of her own.

Jones and fellow freshman Elly Raush also gave the team solid production on the front line with seven kills each as Jones continued her efficient work with seven kills in only 12 attacks for a .500 attacking percentage.

Quesada closed out the tournament with a double-double as she polished off 12 digs to go with her 14 kills while Buckingham and freshman Rachael Holehouse did much of the backrow work with 12 and 11 digs respectively.

Acevedo added in 36 assists in the win for the Sailfish who will return to the Sunshine State pleased with their 12-2 season record.

PBA returns to action on Tuesday, September 18th when they head to Melbourne, Florida for a matchup with Florida Tech at 7 pm.
