JEFFERSON CITY, TENN.- Faith Rohn can serve a volleyball quite well. Those who didn’t know that about PBA’s freshman outside-hitter sure will after Friday night when she served 10 of her team’s 16 aces in a 3-0 win over Carson Newman College. The Sailfish also continued their solid play in their nightcap match when they defeated UNC-Pembroke as a part of the Carson Newman Tournament.
The pair of victories pushes Palm Beach Atlantic’s season record to 9-2 with seven wins in a row for the young club. They will play two more matches on Saturday with the University of Montevallo and Lincoln Memorial University on tap for the Fish.
Match One (PBA vs. Carson Newman College)
After a come-from-behind 25-23 win in the match’s opening set, the Sailfish rode the strong jump serve of Rohn for 16 consecutive points including eight aces as PBA dominated their way to a 25-4 set two win. They then closed things out with a 25-20 win in the third set for a 3-0 victory.
The Sailfish hit .432 as a team for the match while limiting the Eagles to just a .147 mark.
Senior Mariela Quesada and junior Christina Alessi continued their solid work by leading the team in kills with 14 and 10 kills respectively.
Becca Acevedo posted 32 assists in the win while Melissa Buckingham led all Fish players with 10 digs.
The loss for Carson Newman dropped their season record to 0-3.
Match Two (PBA vs. UNC-Pembroke)
PBA would reach the ten win mark for the season in their second match of the day as they defeated UNC-Pembroke by the scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-11.
They would once again hit for a strong attacking percentage (.237) while producing a balanced attack from the entirety of their roster.
Alessi led the Fish with 10 kills while Quesada managed nine kills in the victory. Freshman Elly Raush chipped in six kills to aid the attack.
Acevedo and freshman setter Alex Marszalek split the setting duties as Acevedo registered 22 assists and Marszalek added 10 more. Buckingham was once again solid on defense as she led all players with 16 digs.
Marissa Baker led the Braves efforts with 10 kills as they dropped to 5-5 on the season.
