WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- With a packed house roaring with each Sailfish point on Wednesday evening at the Rubin Arena, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team dominated yet another opponent by defeating Florida Tech 3-0 to improve to 11-1 on the season. Redshirt juniors Lisa Jedlicka and Mariela Quesada each contributed 13 kills apiece as PBA hit a collective .323 while holding the Panthers to just a .111 hitting mark.

The win for PBA pushes their overall win streak to four and their home mark to 2-0 as the team quickly reaches near the one-third mark of the season. Tonight’s match had a special presentation between the second and third set as PBA senior Janeen McCormick was honored as the first recipient of the Connie Vanderwey Scholarship.

A dedicated and loved volleyball enthusiast, coach, and mentor within the community, Vanderwey passed away in 2010 from a fight with breast cancer and is the sister of former PBA volleyball head coach Terri Kaiser. Kaiser and many friends and family including Vanderwey’s husband and children were on  hand to raise funds and awareness in Connie’s honor.

Kaiser presented the scholarship to McCormick while the crowd also heard some encouraging words from PBA Interim President, Mr. Bill Fleming.

The first game set the tone for the match as Jedlicka and Quesada each managed five kills as the Fish produced 15 kills total and a .265 attacking percentage in the set to earn a 25-18 win. The team saw an even better performance in game two with a .346 attacking percentage as they had only one hitting error on their way to a 25-16 victory. The Fish closed things out with a 25-18 win in the final set.

Jedlicka put together perhaps her best all-around showing in a PBA uniform on this night as she totaled 13 kills while not registering an error in only 19 attacks. Her .684 attacking percentage led the team. Quesada was dangerous as usual as she collected 13 kills on 34 attacks (.265) while adding in seven digs.

Sophomore Christina Alessi provided the PBA attacking front line with a three-headed monster as she finished the night with eight kills on only 15 attacks with no errors for a robust .533 attacking percentage.

Defensively the team was led by freshman libero Melissa McPeek who continues to show improvement each time out as she put together a great all-around performance of 23 digs to lead all players.

Becca Acevedo continued to effectively run the PBA offense as she registered 39 assists in the win while adding in seven digs and three service aces to her credit.

The Panthers produced a more balanced offense as they had four players register at least five kills but none more than seven kills which belonged to the high-flying Janice Valies. Alexis Mastela added in 23 assists.

The Sailfish will be away from game action through the weekend as they will then gear up for a busy week next week when they will travel to Barry University on Monday, September 26th at 7 pm in Miami Shores, Florida and then back south to Davie, Florida again on Wednesday, September 28th to take on Nova Southeastern University at 7 pm.
