Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Once again needing only three sets the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team won their tenth match in eleven tries to start the season by proving to be too big and too strong against Southeastern University on Friday night at the Rubin Arena. The Fish clobbered their opponent by hitting a solid .241 as a team as they put out the Fire by the scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-23.
The Sailfish (10-1) jumped out to early leads against the Fire (4-5) in each of the first two sets as they opened up a 7-3 lead early in the first-set before leading by as many as 10 points at the end of the set. In set number two it was a similar story as PBA pulled away in the middle to cruise to an identical 25-15 win.
Set three was a credit to the Fire as they never gave up, even leading 20-18 before PBA flexed their muscle one final time in closing out the three set match.
Junior Mariela Quesada was given the ball early and often in this one as she finished with 17 kills to lead all players while producing a .244 attacking percentage over the course of 41 attacks on the night. She tallied her second double-double of the season by adding in 11 digs.
Christina Alessi, PBA’s strong right-side player and a product of The King’s Academy, continued her solid work by hitting .444 in 18 attacks as she managed 10 kills while adding in four block assists.
Standing alongside Alessi on the PBA front-line was senior middle-blocker Lanae Robinson who led all PBA players in attacking percentage as she hit .455 for the match including seven kills while adding in four block assists.
Becca Acevedo continues to impress each time out as she produced 37 assists in the win while fellow freshman Melissa McPeek once again made a number of impressive defensive plays on her way to 20 digs to lead all participants.
McPeek was joined on the defensive front by standout plays from sophomore Lexie Grizzle and senior Jessie Kubiak with Kubiak adding in eight digs.
The Fire were paced by nine kills from sophomore Karina Mambuca with Tara McSherley handling the setting duties with 15 assists. Katie Trenski chipped in ten digs in defeat.
Palm Beach Atlantic will now have a few days rest and a weekend off from volleyball action as they will then move their attention to Florida Tech who they host on Wednesday, September 21st at 7 pm in the Rubin Arena. Fans are encouraged to wear PINK to support Breast Cancer Awareness as the PBA Volleyball program will honor Connie Vanderway in a special presentation.
